Remote Access
Main Menu TAMUK Main Menu

Only TAMUK faculty, staff, and students may remotely (outside the TAMUK domain) access proprietary online resources subscribed to by the Jernigan Library.   (Because of license and/or access issues, some online/electronic resources are not available remotely via any method.)

WHY do I have to logon? Proprietary databases contain information (often full text copyrighted articles) that is owned by private companies.  Though accessed over the Internet, this material is available only by subscription to universities or other subscribers, often at great cost.

To gain access to databases from off campus, use the Off Campus links.  You should see a white Library logon page that asks for two pieces of information: Name and University ID.  For Name, use last name (surname) alone.  For University ID, use the "K" number issued by the University.  The use of the "K" number is new, so if there are problems please email BRS@tamuk.edu or call 361 593-4082.

If there are problems with the off campus links, another method is available to users:  the proxy server/automatic configuration script method.  The proxy server requires that the workstation be set up as a proxy client.  If you have trouble with the Off Campus links, set up your browser with automatic configuration script (remember that if you do this you must use the regular on campus links, not the off campus links, if you install the automatic configuration script).  Please follow the link above for instructions.

  • NOTE: You may not be able to use the proxy server and gain remote access if:

AOL users have reported problems gaining access to databases.  The usual solution is to minimize the default AOL browser and use a full featured browser such as Internet Explorer, Netscape, or Firefox.   In the past, free Internet providers such as Juno, United, MSN, NetZero, or Bluelight have not worked with proxy servers.

A home or workplace firewall may interfere with a proxy server.  Consult your firewall documentation or your network administrator for help in configuring the proxy server. In many cases, you can enable access through a firewall by opening port 8080.
