How Do I Find Out If Jernigan Library Carries a Specific Journal?
Main Menu TAMUK Main Menu

Jernigan Library has an extensive collection of journals in print and microform. If you know the name of the journal you are looking for, it is quite simple to discover if we carry it.

Go to OASIS and select "Title" search. Type in the title of the journal you need. REMEMBER: Individual journal article titles are not listed in OASIS.

There are various ways your search results might appear on the screen.

For example, if you are looking for the journal titled "Comparative Literature," you will go to OASIS and conduct a title search. Results may include several different titles. Choose the result that matches your search query. In this case, the first entry of the list of titles tells me that there are six different items listed under the title "Comparative Literature."

When you click on the first entry of the results list, you will see six titles, only one of which is the exact title, "Comparative Literature." When you click on this title, the record for the journal "Comparative Literature" appears on the screen. It will look like this:

Comparative Literature

Imprint Eugene, University of Oregon

PN851 .C595 CURRENT JOURNALS-FLOOR 1

LIB. HAS Current year.

Latest Received: (the date of the latest issue we have)

PN851 .C595

Location BOUND JOURNALS-FLOOR 3

LIB. HAS 1-(1949-)

PN851 .C595 is the Library of Congress Call Number for this journal. Current issues are shelved on the first floor alphabetically by title, while older issues are in bound volumes on the third floor and arranged by Call Number.

In the top box, the journal record tells you the date of the most recent issue received by the library. In the bottom box, you will see the notation: LIB HAS 1(1949-) This means that the library began carrying this journal in 1949 with volume 1. The dash after the date with no additional date tells you that the library has carried this journal continuously from that time up to the present.

If the notation reads: LIB. HAS 1 (1949-1960), then you would know that we only have issues of this journal between the years 1949 and 1960 and that we no longer subscribe to this journal.

Some of Jernigan Library's journals are not available in print format for every issue, but may be available in microfiche. The journal record for these journals will look like this:

Time [periodical]

AP2 .T37 MICROFICHE

AP2 .T37

Location BOUND JOURNALS-FLOOR 3

LIB. HAS 8-26 (1926-1986)

In the top box you see the magazine's Call Number and the date of the most current issue received by the library. Current issues of this particular magazine are kept at the Circulation Desk (this is true of the more popular magazines). Other current journals are located on the first floor of the library and arranged alphabetically by title.

In the second box you will once again see the Call Number. You will need this number to access the microfiche, along with the date, volume and issue numbers of the particular article you are looking for. Notice that we have carried TIME in microfiche format from volume 127 of the year 1987, all the way up to the date listed after the notation "Latest Received." All of Jernigan Library's microfiche are located on the First Floor, to the far left as you enter the main area of the library. Microfiche readers are located behind the microfiche cabinets and along the back wall. If you need assistance finding microfiche or using the microfiche readers, do not hesitate to ask for help.

If the article you are looking for appeared in TIME before 1987, you will need to look at the third box. This box tells you that issues from 1926 to 1986 are in bound volumes located on the third floor. You will need to make note of the Call Number as well as the particular date, volume and issue numbers of the article you require.
