Jernigan Library Policy for Food and Drink
in Public Areas and Study Rooms

The university community is encouraged to use the Jernigan Library as a place for research, study, reflection, and leisure. To promote a welcoming environment, the library permits the consumption of food and drink on the premises. Some restrictions are necessary because the presence of food and drink introduces the potential for damage. Also, food and drink not discarded appropriately invite pest infestation that can damage the collections.

Limited eating and drinking are permitted within the library’s public areas and study rooms. We are counting on our users to help us make sure that the books and computers remain safe and the building stays clean.

Permitted:
  • Drinks in rigid, spill-proof mugs or bottles with pop-up or screw tops only.
  • Small snacks such as chips, energy bars, fruit in a container and dry cereal are permitted
NOT Permitted:
  • Drinks in open cans, lightweight fast food cups and containers with no tops.
  • Food deliveries.
  • Messy or strong smelling foods such as pizza, tacos, curried chicken, burgers, tuna or egg salad sandwiches and cereal with milk.
Food and Drink are NOT ALLOWED in the follow areas:
  • Electronic Resources Center (1st floor)
  • Electronic Classroom (Rm 123)
  • Microfilm Stations
  • Maps Area
  • South Texas Archives and Special Collections
  • Book & periodical shelves
  • Computer Lab (3rd floor)
Student Lounge
The Student Lounge is located on the 2nd floor of the library and is equipped with tables, chairs, and vending machines. Students may bring prohibited food into the library, provided that they eat it in the Student Lounge.

All food and drink refuse is to be discarded in trash receptacles. Leave the study area clean for the next person.

Clean any spilled food or drink immediately with paper towels available in all restrooms. Report major spills to the reference desk, circulation desk, or help desk.

Individuals who disregard the policy will be asked to empty their unacceptable drink container, put their food away or leave the library.

The Library reserves the right to suspend this policy for special library events and exhibits.
